Stellite™ is a group of cobalt-based alloys known for their exceptional resistance to corrosion, impact, abrasion, and high temperatures. These alloys primarily contain cobalt and chromium but may also include trace amounts of nickel, iron, carbon, molybdenum, manganese, and silicone. At Barron Industries, we commonly use Stellite™ 3, 6, 21, and 31 alloys to make our castings.

Stellite™ 3

Stellite™ 3 alloys have a high tungsten and carbon content. That means that investment castings made from Stellite™ 3 will have superior corrosion, abrasion, and oxidation resistance. The high carbon content helps with abrasion, erosion, and wear resistance while the tungsten ensures these properties are maintained at high temperatures. These alloys also have hardness values of around 48 Hardness Rockwell C (HRC).

Stellite™ 6

Stellite™ 6 alloys are cobalt-based alloys with chromium and tungsten. Investment castings made from Stellite™ 6 have excellent hardness values alongside superior wear, corrosion, impact, and shock resistance. Hardness values are around 42 HRC. Casted components from Stellite™ 6 alloys also have a low coefficient of friction which makes them ideal for mating surfaces or contact with other metals where lubrication isn’t possible.

Stellite™ 21

Stellite™ 21 alloys typically contain chrome, tungsten, carbon, nickel, silicon, and iron. They have excellent strength, superior wear and scratch resistance, strong erosion and corrosion resistance, and s the highest thermal and mechanical shock resistance at high temperatures. Typical HRC values are 36.

Stellite™ 31

Stellite™ 31 alloys contain tungsten, carbon, manganese, nickel, and chromium. Castings made from Stellite™ 31 have superior oxidation and thermal resistance, as well as excellent mechanical shock and impact resistance. Stellite™ 31 also maintains a hardness level of HRC 32 at high temperatures.
